2024 Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning & Civic Engagement

The mission of the Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement through Higher Education is to promote networking among practitioners, research, ethical practices, reciprocal campus-community partnerships, sustainable programs, and a culture of engagement and public awareness through service-learning and other forms of civic engagement. This year's conference theme is Bridging the Gap Between Personal and Social Responsibility Through Knowledge, Engagement, and Action.
Belmont University faculty, students and staff are regular presenters at the Summit.
Award Nominations are being accepted for students, faculty, staff and community partners engaged in a variety of aspects of service-learning. The award recipients will receive a complimentary registration to the 2024 Gulf South Summit Conference, a commemorative plaque, and a $1,500.00 honorarium. The deadline for award nominations is December 11, 2023. We hope you will nominate an outstanding colleague, community partner or student for one of the awards. Note: self-nominations are permissible for all award categories.
Since Belmont is a Gulf-South Summit Member Institution, Belmont faculty and staff are able to register at the member rate. Contact Tim for details.

Teaching Social Action Institutes
Teaching Social Action Institutes are designed to give faculty and staff the knowledge and tools to incorporate student-led social action campaigns by modifying a current course or co-curricular activity or developing a new one. Social action is a transformative experiential learning model where students in a college course launch their own campaign or join a community organization's campaign. There are no registration fees to attend.
Winter '24 Teaching Social Action Institute, January 3 - 5, 2024 (online)

Both trainings will be led by Dr. Scott Myers-Lipton, Director of the Teaching Social Action Initiative. If you have any questions about the Winter ’24 Institute, please contact Scott.
Spring ’24 Teaching Social Action Institute, March 9-10, 2024 (in-person at Rhodes College, Memphis, TN)
The training will run from 9am-5:30pm on March 9th, and 9am-12:30pm on March 10th, and is hosted by Professor Austin Herrison. Click here to apply; applications are due Friday, February 23, 2024.
Summer ‘24 Teaching Social Action Institute, June 14-16, 2024 (online)

Fall ‘24 Teaching Social Action Institute, October 5-6, 2024 (in-person at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI)
