A group of students and a professor are seated around a table in a classroom, engaged in discussion. The professor, sitting at the head of the table, is speaking and gesturing with his hands. The students, equipped with laptops and notebooks, appear attentive, with one student taking notes while others listen or work on their computers. Federal Financial Aid

Medical students often need to borrow student loans to help supplement any scholarship or other financial support they receive to help pay for medical school expenses. There are currently two types of Federal Direct Loans:  Direct Unsubsidized and Direct PLUS (Grad PLUS).  However, based on legislative changes passed into law in July 2025, please note important changes in who can apply for Grad PLUS.

  • Direct Unsubsidized
    • Available to all borrowers
    • Class of 2030 may borrow up to $50,000 (new annual limit for first-time borrowers in their degree program)
    • Returning borrowers may borrow up to $40,500, although that amount is prorated higher for enrollment periods beyond 9 months
  • Direct PLUS (Grad PLUS)
    • Available to returning students at Frist who already have a Direct Loan of any kind (including Direct Unsubsidized) as of July 1, 2026, for their current degree program at the Frist College of Medicine.
    • Not available for students in the incoming Class of 2030

Steps to Take

  1. Fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible. Submitting your FAFSA in a timely manner allows you to apply for the maximum Direct Unsubsidized Loan you have qualified for.
  2. Belmont's School Code is 003479.
  3. Returning students, be sure that you also apply for Direct PLUS Loan if you will need to borrow more than the maximum Direct Unsubsidized Loan amount.  Remember, this assumes you are a returning student who already has or will have a Grad PLUS as of July 1, 2026.  Incoming students in the Class of 2030 are not eligible to apply for Grad PLUS.
  4. Completing your Direct Plus Loan Application is a separate stepin addition to completing your FAFSA.
