in between | Tom Carr

October 30 – December 01
Reception + Gallery Talk: Nov 02 from 4-6pm
Leu Gallery in the Lila D. Bunch Library

in between is an installation created by 2023 Watkins College of Art Artist-in-Residence Tom Carr. It consists of fragments suspended on the walls of the gallery in an exploration of fragility, precariousness, scale, opposites, relationships, and context—fundamental elements of Tom Carr’s work. Color, light, and shape transform visual perceptions. During the run of the exhibit, the artist will occasionally change the arrangement of the fragments. In this way, a return visit may provide a different visual experience!

Pattern Study | Yun Shin

November 06 – December 01
Reception + Gallery Talk: Nov 09 from 4:30–6pm
Gallery 121 in the Leu Center for the Visual Arts

Pattern Study takes its name from a repetitive, intelligible, and recurring practice, and also refers to the devotion of time and investigation of decorative design used as a guide in craft. These two-dimensional abstract patterns created by APSU Assistant Professor of Drawing Yun Shin are composited by many gridded geometric shapes and subtle color that are inspired by handcraft objects commonly created by women.

Yun Shin is an assistant professor of art at Austin Peay State University, where she teaches drawing. She has earned several art degrees, including an M.F.A. in studio arts from the University of Texas at Austin, a B.F.A. in craft and material studies from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a B.F.A. in industrial design from Cho-Sun University in South Korea.
